Components for aircraft – lightweight and resistant to fire and corrosion

In seats, luggage systems or cargo systems, our high-performance polymers are ideal for a wide variety of applications in aircraft cabins. They are lightweight, quiet and lubrication-free. Many of our materials also comply with the FAR 25.853 and UL94 V0 fire safety standards.

And they are insensitive to chemicals and saltwater. This means that they meet the decisive requirements for use in structural parts on the aircraft exterior: wings, fuel pumps and broadband antennae, for example.

Benefits of igus products in the interior:

  • Save installation space and weight
  • Low noise and low vibration
  • Lubrication-free and maintenance-free
  • Fire resistant according to FAR 25.853

On the exterior:

  • Resistant to chemicals and corrosion
  • Resistant to dirt

igus materials for aviation - flame-retardant and tested according to FAR 25.853

A fire on board an aircraft is one of the most serious events that can happen when flying. That is why all materials used in and on the aircraft are subjected to extensive FST tests. In our blog, we explain how these tests are carried out, what regulations apply in Europe and the US, and which igus bearing and energy chain materials fulfil the fire safety standards:

Solar aircraft

First two-seated solar aircraft

In the prototype of the first two-seated solar aircraft, all components had to be chosen carefully. Above all things, it had to be light. Therefore, polymer bearings were used in different places, such as the wing suspension. They replace the metal bearings as they are lighter but still able to withstand the application's high loads.
Overview of aerospace applications

...and many further success stories

In this selection of more than 40 application examples, you can find out how our energy chains and bearing products are used in aviation and aerospace, where they fulfil different requirements. Here, it was necessary to overcome challenges such as high loads, extreme temperature differences, confined spaces or specifications requiring low weight.
