Technical data:

  • What was needed: Sports equipment that allows physical fitness to be trained on the basis of surfing movements - without any water at all
  • Requirements: No maintenance, absolutely no lubrication, low wear, affordability, smooth dry running, low friction
  • Products used: dryspin® high helix lead screw with matching lead screw nut, iglidur® plain bearing, drylin® W linear guide

  • Success for the customer: To realistically simulate the complex movements of surfing, the company has shifted completely to iglidur high-performance polymers. Optimised for friction and wear, igus tribo-polymers fulfil expectations, especially in terms of reducing cost and maintenance.

Surf Evolution

Problem

Among surfers, Brazil is a well-known destination. Endless sandy beaches, a variety of wave formations and bays. But Surf Evolution shows that you do not always need water for surfing. The Brazilian company is developing fitness training equipment that simulates surfboard movements.

The Surf Evolution designers found that metallic bearings were too expensive and maintenance-intensive in their novel surf machines. The first version still had metallic bearings. But it soon became apparent that component cost was too high and, even worse, maintaining the many bearing points was too time-consuming.

Solution

To realistically simulate the complex movements of surfing, the company has completely switched over to iglidur's high-performance plastics. Optimised for friction and wear, igus tribo-polymers fulfil expectations, especially in terms of cost and maintenance reduction.
The training equipment was redesigned and the bearing technology systematically replaced. The numerous bearing points are now equipped with iglidur plain bearings. The load setting uses drylin lead screws, which require no lubrication or maintenance. igus drylin W linear guides ensure smooth back-and-forth board movements. This not only improved maintenance, but also reduced costs by 70%.
